How Scholars Date the Book of Daniel

Daniel takes its name not from the author, who is actually not identified, but from its hero, who was allegedly among the first Jews deported to Babylon.

The clear scholarly consensus is that Daniel is a forgery, authored around 165 BC, but set 450 years earlier.

Strictly speaking, Daniel does not belong to the prophetic writings but rather to a distinctive type of literature known as “apocalyptic,” of which it is an early specimen.
